the dress in the making.

Some of you may have read my fashion dilemma #2 post about the dress I couldn’t find. Well, as promised I keep you posted on my progress with my a little brave plan to make my own. Until yesterday I didn’t even have a sewing machine, remember my sister’s wedding is in two weeks..Luckily one of my colleague’s wife was kind enough to lend her’s to me so now I can get sewing. Only problem is, I haven’t made a pattern since 4 years let alone sewn together even the smallest piece. So it’s going to be an adventure I guess. But, my eyes were almost wetting themselves when I had the machine all set up full of joy about the prospect of making something. Making something gives me such a rewarding feeling, it’s not about how good it is or how much anyone likes it, it’s about having made it all by myself.

Is it really that unusual nowadays to make and mend do?

My biggest problem when making things is that I picture them so long any minute I have spare that I can’t wait to see the final result. Unfortunately that means that I am impatient and must force myself to take extra care when creating the piece not to get untidy seams or anything messy on it. Well, as it’s my sister’s wedding I will take extra care and remind me to take my time.

So far, I have got some muslin which I used to make a raw pattern on the doll (mine is 1/2 size) after sketching it down. As you can see it’s pretty much the design of the dress I originally wanted. The ruffles seem a bit big and overpowering but maybe the organza I’ll use later will make the difference otherwise I’ll reduce them slightly. I have ordered some fabric samples at cheapfabrics.co.uk which hopefully arrive on Monday so I can make the final choice and order the lot. So far, so good..once the samples have arrived and the fabric choice is clear I get on the final pattern and draw it out on cardboard.

Sidenote: When I was after the sewing machine and kept asking people whether they got one I could borrow I was surprised at their looks, noone had one and they were astonished that I expected them to actually make sometimes things or even only mend a pair of trousers now and then. Is it really that unusual nowadays to make and mend do? Do people only consume? How about you?

One comment for “the dress in the making.”

  1. I was thinking about getting a sewing machine and taking evening classes in sewing but I don’t have time right now. But I know a few people who own a sewing machine and actually know how to use it. That can be really helpful :D
    Good luck with your dress!
